Counselling and Psychotherapy
Both counselling and psychotherapy are talking therapies that rely on a positive relationship being established between the Client and the Therapist. This relationship is built up over time and is based on the premise that the therapeutic space is a safe space for the Client to explore the difficult issue that brought them into therapy. For therapy to be successful the relationship must be based on mutual respect.
Most Clients enter into counselling to deal with one specific issue such as a bereavement, the ending of a relationship or phobias. Counselling can be brief (6 sessions) or for a longer duration.
Psychotherapy is likely to focus on the wider aspects of a client’s life and how patterns of behaviour may be limiting the Client’s potential to live a satisfying and enjoyable life. It may explore the Client’s childhood and other significant events in their history. This can involve looking at how the Client’s past is re-created in both their present and potentially, in their future life.
Both therapies are a mixture of challenge and support as the aim of any therapy is to bring about a positive change in the client’s life.
