Supervision
Supervision is an ethical requirement that supports all therapists, both new and experienced in developing their clinical skills in support of their clients. It also ensures that therapists are working within the frameworks that are set out by the professional regulatory bodies that underpin the benchmark standards for both counselling and psychotherapy. The two main organisations are the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Additionally supervision supports therapists to ensure that they are ‘fit to practice’ as the Supervisor has clinical responsibility for their work.
Supervision is also a reflective space for therapists to develop their therapeutic skill set and to address any ‘blindspots’ or growing edges to enhance both their client work and their development as therapists.
It relies on the commitment of the Supervisee to remain in contact with the Supervisor even when there are differing views. This can be challenging for some therapists.
It is a creative process and is based on the premise that both parties have a mutual respect for each other.
